10 WWE Superstars Who Need A Character Change
Because knowing 27 variants of an armbar is very good, but it isn't everything.
Characters are a staple of the wrestling business. They are the foundation for a lot of the success that big wrestling companies have had. When people think of wrestling they immediately think of larger-than-life athletes like Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock - big stars whose popularity transcended their industry.
However, on top of their natural gifts, they were also given characters that truly connected with the crowd, which allowed them to flourish and ultimately go on to become global icons. Hulk Hogan was a huge star in the '80s, with his child-friendly ‘take your vitamins and say your prayers’ schtick, while Stone Cold really connected with the '90s audience, thanks to his rebellious, anti-establishment gimmick.
Now, obviously, not everyone is blessed with the innate charisma that these stars possessed, but, given the right character, anybody with a smidge of personality can get over with an audience. Unfortunately, giving their superstars a suitable gimmick has seemed to be a problem for WWE writers over the years. This is my list of 10 WWE superstars who, currently, aren't quite as popular as they could be .
10. The New Day
As I said, I’m certainly not trying to suggest that the soon-to-be longest reigning WWE World Tag Team Champions in history are unpopular. On the contrary, they’re arguably the most popular tag team in WWE right now, and have been for some time. However, their schtick is slowly starting to get stale and it might well be time for a change.
As I’m sure you’ll know, live crowds are suckers for a good catchphrase (myself included) and New Day have coined a good number of those. Surely, though, there gets to be a point where we’re going to get fed up of echoing their cries of ‘who?’ in an owl-esque high-pitched tone. And that blasted trombone...
Their booking as of late has been somewhat bizarre, as it’s unheard of for out-and-out babyfaces to retain their titles by way of disqualification as often as the current champs do. It’s even more baffling when, the next night on Raw, they come out all happy and full of positivity like nothing had happened.
New Day need to change it up before the crowd turns on them, just like they did following their debut as a team. I'll admit, this seems like a long shot at the moment, but WWE fans can be fickle beasts.
