10 WWE Tag Teams Vince McMahon Actually Loved
3. The Mega Powers
In late 1987, during an episode of Saturday Night's Main Event, Hulk Hogan saved 'Macho Man’ Randy Savage from a beat down by the Hart Foundation and the Honky Tonk Man. With that save and a shake of the hand The Mega Powers were born.
In February 1988, Hogan lost the WWE Championship to Andre the Giant. Andre then immediately surrendered the belt to Ted DiBiase. This led to the title being vacated. A tournament at WrestleMania IV saw Savage crowned champion setting up a year-long narrative.
The Mega Powers headlined the inaugural SummerSlam at Madison Square Garden, defeating The Mega Bucks in the main event. The show was a huge success at the box office, second only to WrestleMania that year. Hogan and Savage captained a team at the Survivor Series. WWE began to tease tension between the two over the title and Savage's valet Elizabeth.
This inevitably led to a jealous Savage turning heel. The match was set for WrestleMania V. Hogan defeated the egomaniacal champion in an epic encounter. The explosion of The Mega Powers was McMahon’s plan from the beginning, but the fact that the team carried the company for over a year headlining several pay-per-views made the them one of Vince’s favourites.
