2. The Road Warriors
The Road Warriors - a team so good Vince McMahon cloned them twice. The Chairman noticed how popular the face painted duo were in the NWA territories and decided he wanted the magic for himself.
WWE were initially unable to sign Hawk and Animal so they created their own homage in the form of Demolition. The shiny new team of Ax and Smash needed worthy rivals.
Enter The Powers of Pain - a team The Road Warriors had feuded with in the NWA. Not content with Demolition being Road Warrior-lite, Vince also gave The Warlord and Barbarian a makeover. Now both teams looked a little bit more like Hawk and Animal.
After all, why have one photocopy when you can have two?
By 1990, Vince had finally landed The Road Warrior’s signatures. Renamed The Legion of Doom Hawk and Animal would dominate the division. Ax, Smash and Crush of Demolition would be served as sacrificial lambs to the chairman’s new toy.
Vince was so enamoured with the duo of Hawk and Animal that several WWE runs would follow despite their stormy relationship with authority. WWE even attempted to resurrect the team after the untimely death of Hawk in 2003. Pairing Animal with Heidenreich was doomed from the start but the boss just couldn’t let go of those shoulder spikes.
