10 WWE Title Reigns That Proved Utterly Pointless

9. John Cena (2011)

Similarly to the previous entry, John Cena had a worthlessly short WWE Title reign during the latter months of 2011. At SummerSlam, Alberto Del Rio cashed in his Money In The Bank privileges. Winning the WWE Title from a stunned CM Punk, Del Rio had finally reached the top of the mountain. It wasn't to last, and at the very next Pay-Per-View - Night Of Champions - he had lost the belt. Facing John Cena in the co-main event slot (right behind Triple H vs. CM Punk), Del Rio's reign had lasted around 35 days. This in itself was a relatively pointless exercise from WWE's creative team, but it couldn't hold a candle to Cena's subsequent stint with the belt. After emerging victorious by submission at Night Of Champions, Cena lost the title at Hell In A Cell 2011. All in all, John's run with the title lasted exactly 2 weeks. The Hell In A Cell encounter was actually a Triple Threat affair, one also featuring CM Punk. During the bout, Cena was handcuffed to the cell structure, enabling Del Rio to win the strap by beating Punk. Especially considering this fell hot on the heels of Punk's 'I'm leaving WWE' spiel that Summer, this seemed unnecessary.
