While Shawn Michaels’ wrestling retirement wasn’t as permanent as Stone Cold’s, he learned his lesson from the Crown Jewel debacle and has retreated back into his prominent NXT trainer role. And in all likelihood, that’s where he should remain. Still, though, the idea of just one more match against AJ Styles can’t help but get the cogs whirring in any fan’s brain.

AJ’s jump to WWE in 2016 opened the door for all manner of dream matches, against the likes of Cena, Reigns, Orton et al. But it’s hard to imagine a more apropos and exciting opponent for the Phenomenal One than the Heartbreak Kid.

Two undersized wrestlers who nevertheless became true main eventers, won the trust of Vince, became the faces of their respective companies. Cocky southern high flyers who can throw down on the mat as well as leaping from the top rope.

You could extend this to other dream HBK matches - Bryan, Rollins, Cole - but AJ feels like the one we should by all rights have gotten to see. Michaels is a smart guy with a good job behind the scenes - he’ll surely never be back. If this was on the table, though? Surely he’d be tempted.
