A lapsed fan friend of your writer laughed upon hearing that Vince McMahon worked a match at 'Mania 38. "Wait, you're not serious?", he asked. "Deadly serious" was the reply. His mind was then blown all over again when learning that "the NFL guy" Pat McAfee was McMahon's opponent on the grandest stage.

It was a fun conversation to have, one way more fun than watching the bout itself.

Here's the thing: A carefully-built Vince tag-team match could've worked as some midcard oddity in 2022, but the build would have to be really good. Tacking his first singles showing in 12 years on as some leech for McAfee vs. Austin Theory was a strange decision though.

McMahon was unsteady on his feet and just didn't need to be out there throwing clotheslines. This was a dude who once ripped Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan for being too old in 1996, and here he was booking himself in bouts aged 76.
