This WrestleMania 31 match was infuriating in every single possible way. The fact that it was happening was maddening enough, as fans had been clamouring for a dream match between Sting and The Undertaker. Approximately zero people were interested in a WrestleMania bout between Sting and Triple H. Why was Hunter in this spot? The words ‘nepotism’ and ‘privilege’ immediately spring to mind.

It gets worse. Fans didn’t want to see Triple H in this position, but they could at least stomach it if it meant seeing Sting pick up a victory on the WrestleMania stage. What’s more, that would bring the joy of seeing another Triple H defeat. That didn’t happen, as ‘The Game’ used his trusty sledgehammer to defeat Sting in the former WCW Champion’s WWE debut. Quelle surprise.

The live crowd was somewhat sated by the nostalgia overload that the match turned into, but this was a maddening booking decision at best. Sting is a beloved legend regardless of which promotion you watched as a kid. Having Triple H beat him at WrestleMania wasn’t just a kick in the teeth to any remaining WCW fans, it was a sledgehammer to the temple of anyone who watched wrestling during its most popular period.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
