The Undertaker WrestleMania 33

Tears and fears stained screens the world over at the climax of WrestleMania 33 when The Undertaker left yet more kit in the ring following his loss to Roman Reigns in a dispiriting show-closer. It was April 2017, not that far short of three decades since 'The Deadman' first stalked the aisle in WWE, but Undertaker looked much closer to the grave than his original mortician incarnation.

Retirement - if that indeed, was what this was - was reluctantly accepted by his fans and actively welcomed by his critics. Once a 'Phenom', he no longer had the engine to assemble matches as he had done as a 'Show Of Shows' late bloomer between 2007-2013, and had in fact genuinely brought down Bray Wyatt and 'The Big Dog' in their own efforts on WWE's Grandest Stage.

A bizarre Raw 25 appearance in January clung to the concept - Undertaker emerged in a cloak-like ensemble that didn't hide his kite but used intentionally vague dialogue to obscure the eventual plan for his WrestleMania return just a year removed from literally kissing his wife goodbye as the show left the air and he descended back to the depths.

His pleasing 2018 squash victory over John Cena retconned the lot. Magic lightning bolts transferred his gear back onto his ageing frame, and a new routine of short sharp WrestleMania shocks appeared to unexpectedly emerge from the embers of his emotional farewell.
