Although he isn't a well-documented user of marijuana, Sabu, like Jack Swagger, saw any chance he had of making it in WWE washed away due to a run-in with the law and pot. Needless to say, there weren't many restrictions with what you could do in Extreme Championship Wrestling in the early 2000s, but it's a completely different ballgame in WWE as both Rob Van Dam and Sabu learned. They were pulled over by state police in Ohio on July 3, 2006 and with RVD being charged with possession of 18 grams of marijuana and Sabu being charged of drug paraphernalia and nine unidentifiable pills. It was only days earlier that Sabu found himself in a marquee match against John Cena at the Vengeance pay-per-view, but it'd be the final time he'd be prominently featured on programming. Of course, Sabu wasn't holding any gold at the time unlike Van Dam, so his consequences weren't nearly as severe, but the incident didn't bode well for the rest of his tenure with the company. He contended for the ECW Championship a short time later, but went on to flounder for the remainder of the year. Alongside the ECW Originals, the Houdini of Hardcore feuded with The New Breed for the first half in 2007 before being released from his contract that May.
