The parallels between the year Baron Corbin has had in 2017, and the one that Mr Kennedy endured a decade ago, must keep The Lone Wolf awake at night.

Like Kennedy, Corbin looked to have all the forward momentum in the world after pipping a host of fellow upper-midcarders to the Money in the Bank briefcase, but factors have since conspired to rob him of a potential main event opportunity.

The fact that he's currently wearing WWE gold (albeit just the US Championship) will give cause to believe there's still a glimmer of hope. That's all it is though: a glimmer. Few of Vince McMahon's employees ever get a second chance after overstepping the mark backstage.

While we certainly shouldn't be writing the 33-year-old off completely - for one thing, he still has time very much on his side - it's hard to truly get behind someone once their moment in the spotlight has come and gone.
