The lights out trope is most frequently used for two reasons; one of these is for a returning superstar, and the other is to debut a new star. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) routinely puts on some of the best professional wrestling shows in North America, but it also has the storyline chops to match the best of them.

The end of last year's Mystery Vortex III showcased this to a tee, utilising the first lights out trope to great effect.

Then-PWG World Champion Roderick Strong and newly-crowned tag champions The Young Bucks were laying waste to everything in their path, wrecking Joey Ryan, Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano.

Super referee Rich Knox came to the rescue with a chair, swinging for the fences so to speak, only to get ruined by Strong. Roddy set up some chairs, seemingly to hit Knox with the End of Heartache, only for the lights to go out.

PWG doesn't exactly have supreme production values, so before the lights came back out the crowd knew what was up. This didn't diminish the pop however, as the PWG faithful went nuts at seeing PWG founder Super Dragon standing face to face with the champion.

All this turned to turds very quickly however, as Dragon picked up Knox and hits him with a Psycho Driver through the chairs.

Mount Rushmore 2.0 was established.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
