A year ago, Kevin Owens was in a bit of a re-building mode. After his feud with John Cena ended, he was no longer positioned as as top player. At Hell in a Cell, he defeated Ryback and held onto his Intercontinental Title. The following month at Survivor Series he was in the semi-finals for the World Heavyweight Championship. Few expected him to win. He did not.

Like Dean Ambrose, he had not captured a world title at that point, and seemed a long ways off from becoming a top star. He lost to Ambrose in the second match of the night, and then the following month he lost to him again at TLC...and then he lost to him again at Royal Rumble. A bit of a rough run for him.

It wasn’t until a few months ago where he was finally positioned as a main event player again, as he won the Universal Championship. Now he’s a featured performer on Raw, and receives more screen time than just about anybody not named Stephanie McMahon. A year from now he’ll likely still be a top player, and will hopefully have a shot as a babyface before then. It's too bad he had to do all those jobs first, as he still doesn't feel like much of an in-ring threat.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
