11 Terrible Fourth Wall Breaking Wrestling Moments

10. Kofi’s Character

The New Day were positioned as heels when they came to Nashville on the 23, Nov 2015 episode of Raw. They were there to celebrate their one year anniversary since they formed their group, but really, they just wanted to do a long, painful segment about their hatred of country music.

They hit every played-out trope that people do when they make fun of the genre, like pickup trucks, dogs and tractors. But as bad as that was, Kofi Kingston’s line should have earned him a suspension or a fine, or the dismissal of whoever wrote it:

“Country music sucks. This is me saying this, not my character. Country music suuuuuuuucks!”

He admitted he was playing a character on live TV. So does that mean Big E and Xavier Woods were playing characters as well? What about everyone else on the show?

Sorry Kofi, but no other show would do something as dumb as that. We know The Walking Dead isn’t real, but they make us believe it is while watching. If a character on that show said the exact same line “Country music sucks. This is me saying this, not my character!” it would have been just as terrible, but wrestling promoters (and quite a few wrestlers) feel they’re insulting our intelligence if they don’t keep reminding us that it’s fake. Instead, they insult our intelligence when they break character and can't be bothered to play along.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
