2. The Superstar Referee

AJ Styles and Kevin Owens finally had the match that everyone believed they were capable of. Their feud to date has been blighted by bad finishes and awkward chemistry, but they got it right here. AJ Styles picked up the win, retaining the United States Championship in the process, and will surely now move onto a new opponent.

The problem here was that neither man was the star of the match. That role went to the special guest referee, SmackDown Live commissioner Shane McMahon. This match ostensibly existed to build to a Shane vs. KO match further down the line.

Thousands of words have been written on this very site by this very writer about the onscreen redundancy of the McMahons in 2017. There is no desire to see Shane McMahon wrestling anymore, taking up a spot that could go to Sami Zayn or Luke Harper. AJ vs. KO finally delivered, but it did so in spite of the main performer in the match.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
