11 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Double Or Nothing 2022
2. Jade Cargill vs. Anna Jay
The most predictable match on the pay-per-view card, this was more of an exercise in getting Jade Cargill on the show than anything else. This is understandable. The TBS Champion already tracks as a megastar little over a year into her wrestling career. She is great at so many of the things that some veterans never master - and the holes in her game will close with time.
Anna Jay looked weak offensively, hitting the ropes with minimal force and sloppy in her attempts at controlling. Things got better as Jade's influence on the bout came to the forefront but from start to finish, this was a clash of clear telegraphing, awkward pauses, stumbles while the inexperienced wrestlers got into position, and unfortunate botches. The duo never found cohesion and were let down by an overlong runtime that did neither of them any favours.
Cargill could have squashed Jay with no negative side effects here. All the problems listed above could have been avoided. Instead, she was forced to go through the motions (and multiple interferences) before getting it done. A reminder, unfortunately, that for all her immense, positive qualities, Jade isn't yet complete enough to wrestle other inexperienced talents at length. The smoke and mirrors couldn't mask that.
A supplemental Up for the Stokely Hathaway and Athena debuts, which were executed tremendously well. The post-match hit all the right notes and felt like a major shake-up for the women's division as a whole.
