11 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (24 Sept)

4. Kofi's Confidence

Kofi Kingston
WWE

WWE's sit down interview segments are rarely anything less than good, and last night's saw Kofi Kingston, who's on top of his game right now, tell Michael Colle that he is, indeed, on top of his game right now, and he's ready to face Brock Lesnar on next week's FOX debut because he's on top of his game right now. Turns out the WWE Champion loves that phrase.

This format works because the pre-recorded style makes it easy to protect less-than-convincing talkers, who can reshoot any flubbed lines. With a good-to-great talker like Kingston, they're just as effective, and Kofi conveyed supreme confidence as he spoke about the upcoming Lesnar clash, claiming that while most think 'The Beast Incarnate' is there to have his way and walk out as champion, he has faith in his ability and is ready to walk out with the gold on 4 October.

As flawed as Kingston's reign has been at times, WWE have done a tremendous job of presenting him as a spirited, fighting champion, and his confidence growth has been handled naturally. It's nice to see a modern Sports Entertainment babyface with a deep understanding of just how good he is but never comes off arrogant.
