11 WWF Title Challengers No One Remembers
10. Chris Masters
Also in the Elimination Chamber with Carlito and Cena, was The Masterpiece, Chris Masters.
Masters was the recipient of a monster push with the often used body-building gimmick, making him a narcissistic heel in the vein of wrestlers like Lex Luger or Ravishing Rick Rude. While Carlito got a lot out of being in that match, Masters only split one elimination with Carlito, with both them dog piling on Kane. Masters didn't even get anyone to submit to his fabled Master-lock, which had been put over as nearly unbreakable up to that point.
While everyone else in that match enjoyed continued success in WWE, with Cena staying the top dog of the company, Shawn Michaels entering a blood feud with Mr. McMahon, and Kane getting to hold both the ECW title and World Heavyweight Championship. Masters would never hold a single title with the company, getting released in the post-Benoit steroid controversies.
Masters would spend some time on the independent circuit, cleaning himself up, before having an absolute dud of a return in 2009, leading to his release two years later. It's a shame. Considering that he had the look and presence of a fantastic heel as well as some decent technical ability, Masters could have at least had a dominant run in the midcard.
