5. Colt Cabana Becomes National Champion And Meets A New Challenger
Colt Cabana has largely been known as a comedy wrestler, but the Chicago native is a deceptively skilled mat technician with an affinity for catch-as-catch-can grappling. Meanwhile, Willie Mack - who won a tournament for the National Championship at the NWA's 70th Anniversary event - is an equally deceptive aerialist and daredevil.
On Saturday, Colt put aside his hilarious hijinks en route to unseating Mack as champion, instead relying on his arsenal of Dusty Rhodes-like elbow strikes and non-Dusty-like moonsaults. Mack fought valiantly, but mistakes like a missed frog splash and a hard tumble to the outside cost him his gold. The end of the bout came suddenly when Cabana kicked Mack out of the corner before surprising him with a pinning press.
Most surprising, however, was after Colt's victory when James Storm strode passed a despondent Mack in the aisleway. "The Cowboy" - a former TNA World Champion and seven-time holder of the NWA Tag Team title - offered words of respect and admiration for Colt, stating that both men did things their own way. It was then that Storm officially challenged for the National title and boldly predicted that he would be the next to hold the gold.
