12 Huge WWE Dream Matches That Were Supposed To Happen But Didn’t

2. Brock Lesnar Vs Steve Ausin (Raw 2002)

Steve Austin was not a happy man in spring 2002. He was admittedly running hard, pushing himself in the ring and drinking a lot of alcohol. He was also uninspired by the direction of his character and wary of the NWO (who had just debuted in February). So when Jim Ross called Austin before a WWE house show and told him that he was scheduled to lose to Brock Lesnar, clean, and without any buildup on the next episode of Raw Austin decided he would rather go home than comply with the creative. Austin has since admitted that it was the 'biggest professional mistake' of his life and that he should have showed up and tried to come up with a different solution. But he was burnt out and pissed off and the Lesnar job was the straw that broke the camels back. He wasn't right to walk out on the company but he was right not to do the job. What would Austin gain from the loss? Nothing. Plus, the fans would probably see through the Lesnar win as he really wasn't deserving of such an honour at that stage in his career. Austin versus Lesnar has been rumoured to take place since Lesnar returned to WWE in 2012 but the odds of it happening are slim-to-none. Austin is happily retired and pursuing outside interests while Lesnar looks to be out the door after WrestleMania XXXI.
