12 Reasons Kurt Angle Was Brock Lesnar's Best WWE Feud

6. The Eric Angle Swerve

A little remembered fact is that Brock Lesnar versus Kurt Angle wasn't a "first time ever" at WrestleMania 19. They actually had a WWE Title match on a Smackdown episode two weeks before Mania. WWE did the match as a swerve on fans who thought Angle wasn't going to make it to Mania. There were dirtsheet rumours that he was going to have to drop the belt early and get surgery that would rule him out of action. It was announced on the week before the 13th March Smackdown that Lesnar would get Angle on the next week's episode, and fans pretty much thought it certain that Kurt was losing the belt. But what happened on the 13th March Smackdown was a sensational twist. The match started and Lesnar instantly destroyed Angle. But just as he was about to make the pin, he got up and walked away. Something wasn't right. Team Angle then ran down to ringside, so Lesnar exited the ring and chased them off. Slipping back into the ring, Angle then caught him in a roll up and got the one two three. It had been roughly a minute and a half match. What had actually happened, which Michael Cole explained in the replays, was Kurt Angle hadn't been in the ring when Lesnar started the match. It was actually Angle's look alike brother, Eric Angle. Brock had destroyed him and then realised it wasn't Kurt. When he exited the ring to chase Team Angle away, Kurt pulled Eric out and got in the ring to play possum. Unaware that a fresh Kurt was now in the ring, Lesnar got caught in the pin. It was a great twist and added a ton of interest in the episodic development of the feud towards WrestleMania 19.
