12 Terrible Wrestling Returns That Should Have Been Great
5. Alberto Del Rio - 2015
Upon Albert Del Rio's debut on SmackDown he was pushed as a big deal. And deservedly so. He was ready for big things right out of the gate. He was cast as an arrogant, incredibly successful playboy who could back up his big mouth in the ring.
In his first match, he pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. cleanly. It was one hell of a way to make a statement. After his initial huge push wore off, the company seemed to lose interest in him. By the time he left the company, he had a lot of steam, and a racially inspired incident backstage caused him to depart the company.
From there, he went to Lucha underground and Ring of Honor to revitalize his career. WWE was in desperate need of star power, though, and surprisingly brought him back into the fold. Had they pushed him like they did the first few months in the company, he could easily have regained his momentum.
However, the plan was doomed from the start. He was paired with Zeb Colter, which made absolutely no sense. And despite beating John Cena cleanly in his first match back, Del Rio quickly became an afterthought without any storyline support. He was mainly used to put over the top stars in the company without much fanfare.
As soon as he moved to SmackDown, it seemed that perhaps WWE would give him another push, but it didn't work out. Del Rio quickly lost his first two matches cleanly before being suspended. Hopefully, if he does return, the company will actually use him in a prominent role, but that seems like a long shot at best.
It's probably not a bad idea for him to leave WWE once again and go someplace where he's better appreciated
