12 Times Crowds Actually IMPROVED Wrestling Moments
9. Mankind Wins The Title - Raw January 4th 1999
1/4/1999 was one of the busier days in wrestling history. Starting things off in the east with NJPW's Wrestling World in the Tokyo Dome, TenCozy, Jyushin Liger, and Keiji Mutoh all laid claim to IWGP gold. Then on WCW in the Georgia Dome, Hogan regained the title in what would be known as the Finger-Poke of Doom. On that same show though, WCW intercepted the results of that night's main event of Raw, sarcastically writing it off with the phrase, "That'll put some butts in the seats"
It did.
Mankind, also known as Mick Foley, had gained a reputation as a great worker, but never quite presentable enough to represent a company as their champion. He had even worked for WCW, not being able to crack into the upper echelon as Cactus Jack.
In Worcester on an episode of Raw, the dynamics changed. In a match that didn't even last 10 minutes, Mankind with DX in his corner took on the Rock, flanked by the Corporation. Things went back and forth before falling into chaos, as matches was the usual with Vince Russo controlling the booking. Then, with the crowd at their most tense, came the sound of glass breaking, and a returning Stone Cold Steve Austin.
He would lay a viscous chair shot on Rocky to set Mankind up with the biggest win of his career. It might not have been Wrestleania, it might have just been free TV, but the passion in that crowd had Foley feeling like a God.
