12 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Aug 6)
7. Trish Slaps Back
The promos had a couple of rough moments here, hence why Trish Stratus and Charlotte Flair's in-ring confrontation doesn't feature further up the rankings. Regardless, this was a well-scripted, well-presented show-opening segment between two wrestlers who will contest one of SummerSlam's most interesting matches.
It began with 'The Queen,' who claimed that most people lack the genetics, talent, and discipline to hit her level. When Trish saw her greatness, it ate her alive because her and her generation could never match that, and the over-the-top gloating led to what was supposed to be a vignette highlighting Flair's best moments. Instead, we got Stratus' greatest hits.
A typically well-produced package helped remind the audience (particularly younger viewers) of why Trish is held in such high esteem. It led to Stratus' arrival. She said that she had been dreaming of one more match since the Women's Evolution came to life, and wants what Flair has now. Out to prove herself to her kids, her fans, and herself, she said that while Charlotte might be 'The Queen,' she's no Trish, and what Flair said she was about to bow down, Stratus straight-up slapped her across the face.
Taken aback, Charlotte offered only a smile in response. They still haven't properly gotten their hands on each other ahead of SummerSlam and that only heightens the sense of anticipation.
