The inside story is that Lesnar versus Cena at WrestleMania 21 was WWE's plan going all the way back to the end of 2003 when Cena first started to show babyface potential. After a long heel reign through 2004, Lesnar would be doing the job that JBL did at Mania 21, putting babyface Cena over as the hot new star.
