After losing to The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania XXVIII, John Cena's life began to fall apart.

The multi-time world champion fell into an unholy funk the likes of which he'd never seen before, and the year between Mania XXVIII and 29 was the toughest of his professional life, as the man himself admitted.

Don't believe me? Let's take a look at the hardships he endured.

After cleanly beating Brock Lesnar in Lesnar's first WWE match in eight years, Cena won the Money in the Bank briefcase and despite being unsuccessful with his cash-in still got shoe-horned into title shots in the months following. He sat proudly at the main event of the overwhelming majority of PPVs during the time, and didn't suffer a single clean loss.

The miserable time continued with the advent of 2013, as Cena won the Royal Rumble against insurmountable odds. This allowed him to shoot high for his true redemption, which he achieved by cleanly beating The Rock for the WWE World Championship at WrestleMania 29.

The John Cena 'bad year' story was an insult to the intelligence of all wrestling fans, and a slight to those he competed against during its duration.

If ever there was a story that showed how blinkered WWE creative's eyes are when it comes to Cena, this was it.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
