Despite losing his United States Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 31, Rusev had healthy momentum heading into the warmer months of 2015.

He seemed poised to become a key player in the upper echelons of the WWE card, a credible, legitimate and fresh heel for the big faces to play off.

Following the feud with Cena he was shepherded into a break-up storyline with his real-life girlfriend Lana, and before long Dolph Ziggler and Summer Rae were also involved. What followed was month after month of terrible segments, horrific chemistry and the end of Rusev as a top tier character (for the time being).

The only positive to come out of the story was actually Rusev himself, who occasionally provided some beautiful comedic moments, none more so than claiming that it was actually Rusev that was crushed.

As good as that was, the transition from superior athlete to sad, emotional hobbling Rusev was miserable.

The story also did absolutely nothing for Lana, who went from being one of the top female performers in the company to one of the worst. In truth, her career is yet to recover.

The story also reached a sharp, rushed ending, when TMZ broke the news of Rusev and Lana's real-life engagement.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
