On November 30th 1979, Antonio Inoki defeated WWF Champion Bob Backlund. The Title had been on the line, so Inoki became the WWF Champion. However, with it taking place in Tokushima, Japan, the WWF were able to represent it whatever way they liked back in North America. Their version of history reads that Backlund had one continuous title reign from 1978 - 1983. What actually happened was Inoki gave Backlund a title rematch on December 6th 1979. Backlund won, only for it to be declared a no-contest due to interference from Tiger Jeet Singh. Inoki didn't want to lose his honour, so he vacated the title. Backlund then defeated Bobby Duncum for the vacant belt on December 12th 1979.
