12 WWE Criticisms That Split The Wrestling Audience

5. The Titles Don't Mean The Same As They Used To

Since the 'Attitude Era', title belts haven't meant quite as much as they once did in the wrestling world. Using WWE as an example, the last time the Intercontinental Title was truly lauded was around 15 years ago. Since then, it's become just another prop for the company, and it's not a sole example. The United States Title has thankfully been rescued from the brink of pointlessness by association to John Cena. Due to the fact Cena is portrayed as a huge star, the US belt gained the rub of that star quality, becoming more important as a result. Some have raised the point that wrestling has moved on from revolving around title belts, but that's ignoring the real issue. WWE still present these titles on a week-by-week basis, so they should be treated with more respect. There's merit to the idea that the way the promotion books feuds has progressed, but it's still largely dependent on the title belts. They shouldn't be mere props, they should be sought after trophies that signify excellence. For some fans, it's unthinkable to downplay the lineage of these belts, but WWE themselves have already done exactly that.
