13. Hulk Hogan Stands Up For America

With the very real Gulf War situation of 1990 and 1991, the decision had been made to turn Sgt. Slaughter heel by becoming an Iraqi sympathiser. As such, Sarge would gone on to defeat the Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Title at the 1991 Royal Rumble thanks to some Randy Savage interference. So here was Sgt. Slaughter, championing Iraq and in possession of the WWF Championship. Who would step forward to represent the USA? Out of the shadows would step The Hulkster, chomping on vitamins, saying prayers and training hard, brother. After Hogan found out that Slaughter and General Adnan had been defacing US flags, he decided enough was enough and made the move to stand up for Old Glory. The PPV itself was given the tagline of €œSuperstars and Stripes Forever€, and this event was all about giving the USA a shot in the arm by having the Real American himself, Hulk Hogan, winning the WWF Title and defeating the pesky foreign menace. Just to further the point, the ever-subtle World Wrestling Federation had American flags dotted throughout the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena and even the ring apron itself was given a red, white and blue paint job. With the US having been so heavily involved in a very real war that had affected so many in attendance at Wrestlemania 7 or watching at home, the Hogan title win was a hugely poignant moment.
