13 Ups & 4 Downs For Impact Wrestling In 2019
7. The Entire X Division
The X division. The thing that put Impact Wrestling on the map from the offset. It may not be as great as it once was when the likes of AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, and Samoa Joe were fighting it out, but it remains one of the best things about Impact's product.
Rich Swann dominated the year in the division after capturing the vacant X Division Championship in a spectacular Ultimate X Match at Homecoming, and it was anyone's game to take the title from him from then onwards. Sami Callihan and Johnny Impact both made for decent title matches at Rebellion and Slammiversary, while Daga, Petey Williams, Jake Crist (the man who took the title from Swann), and many others also put in several sensational performances over the past 12 months.
Some of the stories revolving around the division were excellent, in particular, the Swann/Callihan rivalry over the championship, and the personal feud between Ace Austin and Eddie Edwards. Austin vs. Edwards was never about the X Division Championship, but it didn't need to be. There were already others in contention for the title, so with these two going off on their own little journey away from the main prize on offer, it added much more depth to the entire division. It proved that championships aren't the be all and end all in wrestling.
With Ace Austin serving as the current champion with an upcoming defence opposite Trey of The Rascalz coming at Hard to Kill, things look set to continue down a path of greatness over the next year.
