13 Wrestlers In Situations That Scared The Sh*t Out Of Them

2. Vince, Hebner And Michaels In Montreal

The decision to screw Bret Hart in Montreal at the 1997 Survivor Series was a very bold move. The three key men involved in the screwjob, Vince McMahon, Earl Hebner and Shawn Michaels, were all gambling with their integrity and respect within the business. More seriously, they were gambling that they would get away with it before Bret had chance to punch their lights out. In the case of Vince McMahon, that gamble didn't pay off. Bret got backstage and hit McMahon square in the face. Referee Earl Hebner was the most scared man that night. He was a close personal friend of Bret, he had sworn to god that he'd protect him in the ring. For Hebner to then be the guy who called for the bell when Bret hadn't even tapped, it was a potentially explosive situation to be dicing with. In anticipation of there being repercussions, Hebner arranged for a car to be waiting backstage. He literally legged it out of the ring as soon as the screwjob went down. Running to the back, he jumped in the car, leaving the arena as fast as he could. As for Michaels, was he scared? Who knows. Perhaps there was a sense of satisfaction, perhaps he relished twisting the knife on his old rival. He has since stated that there were some serious nerves that night, adding that he now deeply regrets the incident.
