14 Ups & 3 Downs From NJPW/ROH G1 Supercard
1. Make It Rain
Kazuchika Okada overcame Jay White to claim his fifth IWGP Heavyweight Championship in last night's G1 Supercard main event. It was the perfect moment to continue a perfect wrestling storyline at the conclusion of a near-perfect event.
White had Okada's number heading into the show. He'd defeated 'The Rainmaker' while in his broken state in last year's G1 Climax, then repeated the feat with a shocking triumph over the seemingly recovered former champion at Wrestle Kingdom 13. Both victories were vital in building towards his IWGP Title win, and after winning the New Japan Cup, Okada was out for revenge in New York.
He did so by learning from past mistakes. This was a smarter, sharper Okada: one who understood how to counter his former manager Gedo's interferences and distractions, and approached the bout with a far greater understanding of White's arsenal. That's what led him to victory, and he looked great in doing so.
White loses nothing in defeat, either. First IWGP Title reigns are never long, and he fell to the best wrestler on the planet. He'll be fine. He's a world-class heel, an ever-improving wrestler, and a guy whose day will come again.
For now, though, NJPW belongs to the 'Rainmaker' once more.
