Kurt Angle had already been a fixture in the main event scene and was a former WWE Champion. Chris Benoit had flirted with the companys top prize on a handful of occasions but had yet to achieve his dream. Edge and Eddie Guerrero had feuded with each other earlier in the year, elevating themselves into Smackdowns top tier. On December 5th, 2002, a Fatal 4-Way elimination match was set and the winner would become the number one contender for the WWE Championship. Prior to the start of the contest, Edge was attacked by the gargantuan Albert. As such, all three competitors quickly targeted Edge and his seemingly injured leg. Despite Edges injury, Guerrero was the first man eliminated after he tapped to Benoits Crippler Crossface. Then, to everyones surprise, Edge was able to send the Canadian Crippler packing after delivering a devastating Spear. The match came down to Edge and Kurt Angle. The final two men refused to give in, taking the action to one another. Edge carried on through his injury and came close to putting Angle away in a number of instances. The underdog superstar even held on through a crippling Ankle Lock submission. However, a top rope Angle Slam proved too much for Edge, and the Olympic gold medalist picked up the win.
