15 Biggest WWE Pay Per View Buyrates Of All Time

3. WrestleMania 21, 1,085,000 Buys

WrestleMania 21 was promoted very effectively as 'going hollywood' owing to the location of the Los Angeles Staples Centre it was broadcasting from. The biggest story going in was Dave Batista's overthrowing of his tyrannical leader Triple H. It was slow burning genius as Batista more and more teased he was going to turn on Hunter, with loud 'Batista' chants backing him all the way to turn on his Evolution colleague. The big turn happened after Batista won the Royal Rumble and gave Hunter the thumbs down and a Batista bomb. Fans couldn't wait to see The Game finally get his a** kicked and drop the title at WrestleMania. A host of other emerging youth also helped sell the card, Randy Orton's 'legend killer' gimmick against The Undertaker was the first real 'streak' storyline match. You also had John Cena who was invested in a WWE title feud against long reigning champion John Bradshaw Layfield. Added to this was Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels which was viewed as a dream match between two of the best ever. The first ever money in the bank ladder match and an Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio opener also added considerable value to the card. Fans may knock Batista and Triple H, but their ability to draw a monster buyrate at Mania 21 can't be denied, they were true stars of the promotion.
