15 Edge And Christian WWE Moments That Totally Reeked Of Awesomeness

2. Christian Wins The World Heavyweight Title

Another reason we didn't get a Christian versus Edge programme is because Edge suddenly had to retire in spring 2011. He had been wrestling on borrowed time since 2003, true, and he had been planning to call it a day once his contract expired in 2012, but his sudden announcement was shocking nonetheless. Edge retired as World Heavyweight Champion, having retained the title against Alberto Del Rio in his final match at WrestleMania XXVII. The title was subsequently vacated and Alberto Del Rio (who was still No.1 contender) needed an opponent. Christian became that opponent after winning a 20-man battle royal on Smackdown, setting up a ladder match at Extreme Rules. Christian defeated Del Rio at the PPV, winning the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time. It was a special moment, but it was made even more special by the appearance of Edge, who distracted Del Rio with a car horn setting up the victory. After the match, the Edge and Christian shared a tearful embrace in the middle of the ring.
