15 Most Notorious WWE Wrestlemania Urban Legends

7. Steve Austin's Defining Night Wasn't Even Supposed To Happen

WWE.comWWE.comThe match between "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13 is widely regarded as one of the most important contests in WWE history. Not just for the fact it was the beginning of the Attitude Era (in some people's minds), but also that it made Steve Austin the man who took the next 15 years of professional wrestling by storm. Before that, Austin was just a midcard heel without any real direction. But that night, the WWE took the bravest of brave moves, initiating a double turn and turning Hart - their top star - heel. That wouldn't be done these days, so credit to those in the WWE who opted to make that move at the time. It turned Steve Austin into a brand. But actually, Austin wasn't supposed to be anywhere near Bret at WrestleMania 13. In fact, Hart was booked to fight Shawn Michaels in a rematch from WrestleMania 12. So to move from Hart fighting Michaels to turning him heel on the biggest stage of them all was some switch, and it was a move that certainly paid off. As we know, Michaels "lost his smile" and decided to (temporarily) call it a day with the WWE. Thankfully, I think we can assume that everything worked out alright in the end.
