In summer 2012, Daniel Bryan and WWE Champion CM Punk had been feuding over the title, and that storyline had expanded to include first Kane, and then Bryans ex-girlfriend AJ Lee, who had transitioned into a mentally unstable character following their storyline break-up after WrestleMania XXVIII. Lee was basically playing each man off against the other, claiming to still be in love with Bryan, to have an unrequited crush on CM Punk, and to have a strange fixation on Kane, all at the same time.
