15 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Vince McMahon
4. He Was Once WWE Champion
Egomania running wild, brother. That's the best way to explain when a guy booking a wrestling show puts the championship on himself. In Vince's defense, it's not like he was booked in a strong way or that it was done in a manner where it looked like it was anything other than a fluke. The match aired on the September 16th 1999 Smackdown with Vince taking on Triple H, who was the top heel in the company at the time. Vince was a babyface in this impromptu match. It was in the early days of Smackdown, so they figured they need to do something big to get people talking/watching. McMahon, who was bleeding, was getting destroyed by Triple H along with Chyna as they took care of Shane as well, plus Patterson & Brisco. When Linda McMahon entered, Chyna held her back. Hunter was set to hit the Pedigree when Steve Austin's music started up and he went after Triple H. Austin ended up dropping Hunter with a Stone Cold Stunner. Austin put Vince on top of Hunter, special ref Shane counted the pin and Vince became the WWE Champion. McMahon gave up the WWE Title soon after, which set up a vacant title match at Unforgiven 1999 (won by Triple H). In 2007, McMahon went on to win the ECW Title too. That really didn't matter because ECW was dying by that point and Vince likely knew it. He just put himself on the show as a featured talent to try to save it. Even though Vince wasn't considered a wrestler, for that night anyway he ended p celebrating with the WWE Championship.
