When unification isn't an option, unnecessary titles are simply made defunct. There have been many titles swallowed up into WWE's black hole of old championships that it doesn't need anymore. Titles such as the Women's Tag Team titles, Intercontinental Tag Team titles, Canadian title & Light Heavyweight title are just some of the belts that were chosen to be retired. One notable recent casualty is the Cruiserweight title. It enjoyed a prolific time in WCW, as they had to roster to make a title for cruiserweights necessary. When WCW got bought out by WWE, they didn't have the roster (or frankly, the interest) in keeping a cruiserweight division alive, so the title was put out to pasture. With Hornswoggle as the recognised final holder of the championship no less. It's not necessarily that fault of a particular champion that a belt is made defunct. Sometimes titles just aren't needed and sometimes creative doesn't have/know what to do with them. Other times they've become so devalued that it's better to not have them at all. Whatever the reason behind each defunction, being given the honour of holding a championship, but then being told that the championship is unfit for purpose must be a disheartening experience.
