13. Andy Kaufman & Jerry Lawler Compete In The First Worked Shoot
Even before the term worked shoot was added to professional wrestling vernacular, it was the center of attention over in Memphis Pro Wrestling. Two individuals in particular, hometown hero Jerry The King Lawler, and the legendary Northeastern entertainer Andy Kaufman, worked together to make sure that the Memphis crowd had a killer feud that they would spend their hard earned money on. But because Kaufman was not a trained athlete, they couldnt do the usual methods of feuding. Instead, Lawler and Kaufman worked together to make sure that whenever they were on camera, they stayed in character and made people buy the snake oil they were selling. The early eighties brought a change in how the wrestling world, and the world of professional entertainment, would coincide with one another. Lawlers piledriver to Kaufman, followed by their staged appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, made everybody believe that the rivalry was not only real, but it was aggressive and full of spite. Kaufmans arrogance, along with Lawlers Southern pride, made them a great hero/villain pairing, and its why their feud is still talked about to this very day. Since then, many other worked shoots have been attempted, but none are as revered or remembered quite as well as the one between Lawler and Kaufman.
