12. Bruno Sammartino And Lou Albano Compete In The First Steel Cage Match

We€™ve seen so many steel cages over the years that it€™s no longer such a strange concept. Take two grapplers and surround them with an iron square that encompasses the ring. In order to win, you have to climb up that iron square or exit through the door. The idea of having to leave the ring in order to win a match is strange, but decades later we€™ve grown to accept it as part of the norm. It makes one wonder what people thought of the very first cage match which took place in Atlanta, Georgia back in 1937. At the time chicken wire was used, and since then has evolved into the behemoth it is today. The first recognized WWE (WWWF at the time) event that mentions a cage would be Bruno Sammartino defending the World Title against Lou Albano. Yes, the very same Lou Albano who would later go on to star in Cyndi Lauper music videos and become the first live action Super Mario, was at one point in time a threat to Bruno€™s gold. Video footage of this match doesn€™t seem to exist anywhere which is unfortunate due to how significant it is having two hall of fame wrestlers duke it out within the confines of one of the earliest known cages WWE had built.
