There's nobody who knows wrestling better than old Vinnie Mac himself, the man who built Wrestlemania from the ground up. Vince McMahon is a mastermind and there aren't many who have worked under him who disagree. While he worked from Gorilla position and on commentary for several years, the Montreal incident of '97 generated the idea that Vince McMahon should become an on screen presence - The controlling, crazy boss. From that moment, Vince, and WWE, went from strength to strength. Stone Cold Steve Austin is hailed as the hero of the Attitude era, but Austin would not have scaled to the heights that he did without Vince McMahon as his long term nemesis. It was the perfect match - the rebellious employee turning up against his boss, whose ass he kicked every week on television. People would live vicariously through Austin as he raised hell in WWE, as it translated to every day life situations for many fans. But without McMahon there to generate hate towards himself at the time, WWE could look very different today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xOcCYCFnrk Simply put, McMahon loved being hated because it meant that his business succeeded.
