18 Most Underrated Storylines In WrestleMania History
8. Sable & "Marvelous" Marc Mero Vs. Goldust & Luna - WrestleMania XIV
The Marc Mero that returned to action in late 1997 was a far cry from the chivalrous and dynamic star that had entered WWE a year earlier. He was bitter and angry, frustrated that a knee injury had sidelined him and forced him to watch as manager/wife Sable became a huge star in his absence. She was a blonde bombshell who captivated viewers, her raw sex appeal generating great interest from the all-important 18-35 demographic. Jealous at her success and fame, Mero took to berating her at every turn. He would humiliate her, forcing her to wear a potato sack or a reindeer suit, unwilling to allow her to upstage him. But she often did, sometimes by wearing as little as possible. Mero would form an alliance with Goldust in early 1998 and, as a result, Luna Vachon soon shared the corner with Sable and their polar opposite personalities exploded. They would catfight at ringside, oftentimes costing their charges tag matches to The Headbangers or Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie. When Goldust put his hands on Sable, a possessive Mero took exception and the duo's relationship came to an abrupt end. After a notable episode of Raw in which Goldust and Luna humiliated Sable, painting her face with makeup, they issued a challenge for the second Mixed Tag Team match in WrestleMania history. Suddenly, it was not a question of whether Sable and Mero would accept but, rather, if they could get along well enough to pick up the win. A layered storyline the likes of which Vince Russo did extremely well when focused, it not only pitted two couples against each other, it also served as the latest chapter in the blossoming Sable/Mero feud and the greatest breakout performance by a female performer during the Attitude Era.
