19 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Shawn Michaels

14. He Wasn't Originally Scheduled For The WrestleMania 23 Main Event

Michaels came close to winning the Royal Rumble 2007 as he battled The Undertaker in what is remembered as arguably the best final two series in Royal Rumble history. He ended up finishing second in that match, yet he still got to wrestle in the main event of WrestleMania 23 as the challenger to John Cena's WWE Title. That wasn't the original plan, though. On the "Heartbreak & Triumph" that WWE released in 2007 about Michaels' career, Triple H mentioned that the plan for WrestleMania 23 was going to be a Cena/HHH rematch from the year before. The reason it didn't happen is because Triple H tore a quad muscle for the second time in his career and he was out of action for about eight months in 2007. Michaels ended up challenging Cena at WrestleMania 23 in the last match of the night and he tapped out clean in what turned out to be a classic battle. They went on to have some more memorable matches including a nearly hour long non-title match that Michaels won clean over Cena.
