2 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE NXT UK (10 June)
5. A Bunch Of Yoghurts
Gallus’ Mark Coffey and Wolfgang want the NXT UK Tag Team Championships back from Pretty Deadly. No surprises there.
To get there, though, the pair have to prove themselves in separate singles outings. If they were each going against a member of another tag team, then sure, fire away. But Wolfgang is facing Sam Gradwell – who had burst into the office before leaving rather oddly – who is barely a top-tier singles wrestler.
This made no sense on many levels. Gallus having to prove themselves as worthy Tag Team Championships challengers in singles action is an age-old wrestling trope that has never once worked. Furthermore, Sam Gradwell’s character would never allow the duo to finish their chat with Scala. Having him storm off angrily isn’t enough to save his hardman aura if he’s already decided to wait in line like he’s outside the headteacher’s office, calling people yoghurts.
A big beefy battle awaits us next Thursday between Gradwell and Wolfgang, but the point still stands. For a wrestling story to be worth caring about, it absolutely has to make sense. It is literally that simple.
