After stealing the show at WrestleMania 2000, WWE’s top three tag teams were tasked with the seemingly impossible at SummerSlam: raising the bar even higher. This was accomplished through the genesis of what would become one of WWE’s most iconic gimmick matches, with the Dudley Boyz’ table fetish, Edge & Christian’s fondness for chairs, and the Hardys’ propensity to leap off massive ladders combining to form TLC.

Unsurprisingly, the crowd were into it from the moment the bell rang. The Triangle Ladder match was still fresh in the memory, and TLC I took far less time to get going, and like most of this group’s biggest matches, focused primarily on energy and aesthetics over psychology and pacing. It was popcorn pro-wrestling at its absolute finest, and on that night, tag team wrestling had never felt so important.

From Jeff’s leapfrog leg drop over the ladder to the Dudley Boyz’ table stacks, TLC I was one memorable visual after another, culminating in another Edge & Christian victory. The first Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match was a certified hit, but amazingly, the six participants would better it six months later at WrestleMania X7.
