20 Biggest Myths WWE Tells About Its History
4. The WrestleMania III Attendance Record
The Myth: WrestleMania III drew 93,173 fans.
The Truth: The true number is disputed, and we may never know how many people crammed into the Silverdome that fateful day. WWE loves trumpet the attendance record held by its biggest show of the 1980's.
Gorilla Monsoon read off the "official" number during the show, noting the sea of humanity hanging from the rafters. In recent years, however, questions have been raised.
For one thing, the maximum occupancy of the Silverdone is listed at 80,311, 12k fewer than supposedly attended WrestleMania III. That number doesn't account for temporary seating set up on the football field, and without knowing the space allotted to each seat it is difficult to say whether 12,000 humans could have crowded in.
Then there's the fact that Zane Bresloff, one of the men who promoted WM III, came forward in later years to claim that the number was inflated. By his account, the show drew no more than 78,000 fans.
Unless someone plans on actually trying to count attendees one by one, the truth may never be known...
