20 Most Horrifically Stupid Things That Ever Happened In WCW

19. The Human Torch Match

In early 2000, Sting and Vampiro, a former Mexican wrestling superstar with a painted face and a goth-style character, formed a tag team known as the Brothers in Paint. The team broke apart at Spring Stampede 2000 when Vampiro inexplicably turned on Sting, dragging him under the ring, assaulting him, and costing him an opportunity to win the United States Championship.

Though Sting dominated the early parts of the feud, Vampiro sought to change that when he challenged Sting to an ominously brutal contest at 2000's Great American Bash - the Human Torch Match. The bout - which could only be won by setting one's opponent on fire - was made even more deadly when, prior to the bell, Sting placed the sole torch on top of WCW's Jumbotron-style big screen. The two men battled up on top of the screen, where poor lighting and wide-screen camera angles allowed Sting to duck out of the match and a painted stuntman to take his place. Vampiro then took the torch and ignited "Sting", who tumbled off of the screen and crashed on the entrance stage.

The entire scenario was intensely stupid (and more than a little offensive, following the stunt-related falling death of Owen Hart at a WWE pay-per-view event a year earlier), but it could have been worse - at least WCW chose to retain the services of trained stunt personnel, rather than jeopardize the health of one of their own performers. Perhaps those in charge had learned their lesson after earlier mishaps, which we'll get to in just a little bit.
