It's a mind-blowing thought, but according to several sources (including Paul Heyman himself), Davey Boy Smith nearly signed an agreement to wrestle for ECW back in 1992. Back then, the company wasn't quite the extreme league that it would become, but having Smith wrestle for the promotion would have been a hell of an achievement, and possibly would have helped put it on the map. Fresh off a titanic showdown with Bret Hart at Summerslam 1992 in Wembley Stadium, Smith - known as The British Bulldog - held talks with Tod Gordon and others about wrestling a number of dates in ECW. At the time, the Englishman was also holding discussions with WCW about heading there, something he would eventually do in 1993. Released by Vince McMahon's WWF for receiving shipments of Human Growth Hormone, Davey Boy Smith's body was already starting to show the effects of heavy drug and steroid use, combined with a relentless weightlifting routine. Given that ex-WWF performers such as Jimmy Snuka, Tito Santana and Don Muraco wrestled dates in ECW, it's not a stretch to assume Smith was interested after being fired by Vince McMahon.
