The common perception is that WWE attained ownership of WCW in 2001. But they actually first had ownership way back in the 1980's. Georgia Championship Wrestling was operating the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) name as a way of attracting audiences in other states. In 1984, the Brisco brothers sold their share of GCW to Vince McMahon. As a result, the WWF had a stake in the ownership of the WCW brand name. But it wouldn't last for long. Vince's use of the time slot that he had acquired wasn't going down well with Ted Turner, who preferred the southern tradition that GCW had. Vince ended up selling the time slot and WCW name to Jim Crockett Promotions in 1985.
